Be Cyber Safe! Keeping Kids Safe Online

This is a sponsored post that I’m excited to bring to you because I really think Cyber Safety is an important issue and BGCA has a great resource I want to share with you.  In the interest of full disclosure, I participated in an Influencer Activation Program on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for BGCA. I received a promotional item to thank me for participating. (But that’s NOT why I’m sharing it with you!  😉  I hope you check it out!)

Hi Momma!

Do your kids get online at all?  Mine don’t yet without me directing their experience.  They get to play games and watch videos that I know are safe for them, but I haven’t let them loose yet.  Have you?

There is so much that is good and bright and uplifting about the internet.  So many resources we use for our homeschooling.  Of course, there is also so much that is wrong on the internet, too, as it seems to bring out the best in some and the worst of the worst in others.

My kids are growing up on me though and soon they’ll be loose, messing around on the internet and running into all kinds of things.  How do they learn how to spot a scam?  How do they learn to stay safe?  We will be spending a LOT of time talking about these and so many other issues related to using the internet wisely.

If you aren’t sure where to start these conversations with your kids or even what they (and YOU!) need to be doing to keep them safe on the world wide web, the Boys And Girls Clubs Of America have a GREAT site you should take a look at.

BGCA’s Cyber Safe Site

BGCA’s Cyber Safe Site wants you and your kids to focus on a safe future (because folks… once it’s on the internet, it’s forever!)  They have set up some tips and guidelines and a really helpful quiz for us parents to make sure we’re doing the right things to keep our kids safe.

I love their emphasis on having parents keep a watch on their kids devices.  One of their tips is to let your kids know that a condition of owning a connected device of any kind is that YOU get to periodically (and unannounced) go through the device to see what they’ve been doing.

Another Gift For You!

(Opens in a new window so you don’t lose your current page. ♥ ENJOY!)

They also have a weekly Q&A section where their team of ‘Cyber Safety Experts’ (The “Cyber-tribe”) answers any questions you might have.  I encourage you to scroll through the questions because in them, and their answers, is a whole new sort of education!  😉  I learned some new terms and issues to watch out for that hadn’t occurred to me before.  And if you submit a question there, you are automatically entered to win an iPad Mini and $500 to the Boys & Girls Club of your choice!

Stay Safe!

I hope you get the chance to visit the BGCA’s Cyber Safety Site.  But no matter what, I hope you remember to take the time to keep tabs on what your kids are doing online and who they are interacting with.  There’s no end to the crazy things kids will end up finding on the internet and the best way to stay safe is to be proactive about it and be sure they know what to watch out for.

Have fun!  Stay Safe!  ♥
