Is it a day where you visit your own mother? Or remember her with tears in your eyes? Is it a day when your own children shower you with gifts and extra affection? Is it a day when you reflect on your own motherly duties? Do you find it uplifting or oppressive?
For me, Mother’s Day isn’t really about me. My kids make cards, and hundreds of other sweet little things to show their love, and I find them everywhere. I look at the day as a moment to reflect, and a reminder that of all the things I do for and with my family, loving them and treating them well is just about the most important thing on any mom’s long ‘to-do’ list.
It’s an amazing and sometimes daunting job, being a mother. These little people look up to you to guide them into becoming big people with the strength, courage and fortitude to handle life. It’s a scary responsibility sometimes.
I take comfort in knowing that millions of mother’s have done this before me and millions of them are going through the same struggles right now. Sometimes, as I’m doing the laundry or washing the dishes again, I imagine a circle of mother’s all doing that same task.
I don’t have much more to say right now. This weekend is a big one for reflection for me (it’s also my birthday!) but in the middle of it all I wanted you to know that I’m thinking of you, Mama. I’m praying for you. And I hope your children shower you with papers and crafts and special rocks, flowers and blades of grass in Mason jars, the remnants of hatched eggs, old washers and lost screws. These are the sweet gifts that mean so much from those little hands.
